ASKED DOG TRAINING QUESTIONS

 |
| Why should I hire Born to Lead K-9 Academy? |
| We aren't only
dog trainers, we train people too. We
train dogs to follow obedience commands and we educate owners
to master the three
main components required to maintain a healthy state of
mind in their family dog. We take this approach seriously because
while obedience training is crucial, it is only part of the
process needed to attain a well-mannered, obedient dog. During
training we pass our skills to you, making you more knowledgeable,
more confident and more successful than ever in effectively
managing your dog’s behavior for life. We operate with
one major goal in mind...to be the last dog trainer
you'll ever need to hire for any reason! |

| Why should I train my dog at home? |
The first
phase of learning is the acquisition phase. In this phase,
you teach the meaning of a command. This should be done in
a distraction free environment like your living room or back
yard. The more distraction, the less learning takes place.
Furthermore, when dogs are sent away to in-board training
kennels or work exclusively with trainers, they learn very
quickly that the trainers are the leaders. Once they get back
home, they immediately revert back to their old behavior.
This is why home training is crucial to the success of your
dog’s training. |

| How old does my
dog need to be in order to start training? |
| Your dog should
be at least 4 months old to begin the basic obedience course
and 6 months for the advanced obedience course. It is important
to note that these are general guidelines for obedience training.
However, we offer behavior modification consultations, house
training and basic owner education programs for dogs of any
age. It is never too early to establish your rank as pack leader.
In fact, you need to start the moment you take your new puppy
home. |

| What does obedience
training provide for my dog? |
Through
obedience training, your dog will become confident and he
will gain purpose. He will learn that he has to work for his
food, toys and affection. Obedience training will provide
structure and he will learn that he is not the leader. Over
95% of all behavior issues can be solved through proper obedience
and owner education. Training gives you something to praise
your dog for rather than constantly correcting and scolding
the dog. Training re-inforces positive communication and earns
respect. |

| Why
do you think that dog owners need education? |
Dog owners
are coming from a good place in their hearts but they often
sabotage their dog without knowing it. People often apply
human psychology and emotions to their dogs and this is when
the trouble begins. Most people will say they don’t
understand why their dog is so bad, and that they give him
everything he wants! Owners don’t realize that their
behaviors are, in fact, the greatest influence that can eliminate
unwanted behaviors in their dogs. Understanding how to fulfill
your dog’s needs will unlock his true personality and
give you the relationship you really want. |

| How
much do dog training courses cost? |
This is
arguably the most popular question, and with good reason.
All dogs and their situations are different. It is important
that we speak with you to determine yours. Sometimes owners
are unaware that certain behaviors are a key factor in diagnosing
and recommending a course of action. Because of this, only
after a brief phone consultation can we offer a quote based
on your situation. We offer hourly rates for training as well
as our very popular Obedience and Owner Education Courses. |

| Is my dog too old to train? |
Not unless he has a physical condition that will prevent him from performing. Older dogs can learn just as fast as, and in some cases, faster than young dogs. Even the most stubborn, aged dogs can be conditioned to “learn new tricks.” |

| How long does it take to housetrain a dog? |
If our advice is followed, you will have very few “accidents” after we leave. It is important to remember that the owners must follow through with the house training and be consistent. With consistency and patience, most dogs are 100% reliable within 2-3 weeks. |

| What style of training do you use? |
After our initial in-home consultation and evaluation, we can discuss these options. We will explain the benefits of each method and determine which one is best to ensure your dog’s success. |

| Can you train aggressive dogs? |
The short answer here is yes. There are many different types of aggression and we will need to determine what kind(s) of aggression your dog is displaying. If the dog has a history of attacks where the dog has bitten someone or caused injury, a muzzle will be required. |

| Do you train dogs with separation anxiety? |
Absolutely.
Separation anxiety can come from many contributing factors.
Usually, the dog simply lacks confidence. This is a treatable
and reversible condition. |

| Can you train sheltered or rescued dogs? |
Adopted
dogs are the best! These dogs are fantastic companions and
even if they have been abused or neglected in the past, we
can rehabilitate them. |
